How Amir Ohana contributed to the recognition of the Paraguayan Parliament (source from his entourage)

The President of the Knesset, Amir Ohana, personally invested in convincing the Parliament of Paraguay to support a political solution to the Sahara conflict within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, we learn from his entourage, who confirms the information reported by the Israeli press.

According to our sources, a few days before the adoption of the resolution supporting the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, Amir Ohana had meetings with the President of the Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Latorre, and the Paraguayan President, Santiago Peña, in Israel . He took the opportunity to plead the cause of the Moroccan Sahara in an attempt to convince them to recognize the sovereignty of Morocco like several countries, including his own, which have taken this decision.

“He underlined the importance of the Sahara for the Moroccan people and underlined Israel’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty while encouraging Paraguay to do the same,” indicate members of his entourage.

The Speaker of the Knesset ultimately proved persuasive with an argument that found a favorable response among his Paraguayan interlocutors. A week later, upon their return from their stay in Israel, the president of the Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay, Raúl Latorre, presented resolution No. 796 which was adopted on November 13.

Son of parents of Moroccan origin, Amir Ohana has always proudly demonstrated his attachment to his Moroccan roots. He showed this the day after the reestablishment of diplomatic relations in December 2020. When he spoke for the first time as Minister of the Interior with his Moroccan counterpart, Abdelouafi Laftit, he made a point of addressing to him in Darija. Then, he began to openly plead for his country to recognize the Moroccan nature of the Sahara while he was still in opposition during the mandate of Prime Minister Yair Lapid.

We met him in 2022 in Tangier where he gave an interview to L’Opinion in which he committed to officially recognizing the sovereignty of the Kingdom once his party returns to power. He promised to invest body and soul to convince his political party. At that time, his party (Likud) had just won the legislative elections. Promise kept. In June 2023, after his election as head of the Israeli Parliament, he traveled to Morocco where he announced that his country would soon announce this decision. During his visit, he openly declared from the Moroccan Parliament during a meeting with his counterpart, Rachid Talbi Alami, that the Sahara is Moroccan. The official decision did not take long. The government of Benjamin Netanyahu announced it on July 17, 2023.
