A large crowd gathered on the Dionysian seafront to pay the traditional homage to the ancestors on the occasion of the December 20 festivities. A ceremony accompanied by a thought for the victims of Cyclone Chido.
It is to the sound of roulèrs and kayambs that the City of Saint-Denis launched the festivities commemorating the abolition of slavery in Reunion on Friday, December 20.
On the Dionysian seafront, where hundreds of proclaimed free men and women had spontaneously gathered after the announcement made by Sarda Garriga 176 years ago, the traditional homage to the ancestors was paid in front of a large audience.

An official ceremony in the presence of the resigning minister responsible for overseas François-Noël Buffet, still present due to the Mahoran crisis, the prefect Patrice Latron, the senator Stéphane Fouassin and the deputy Philippe Naillet, as well as numerous representatives from the world association and children of the capital.
A tribute necessarily accompanied by a thought for the victims of cyclone Chido, for whom the mayor of Saint-Denis Ericka Bareigts called “to be one together”to be “solidarity whatever the condition of each person” with “the brothers and sisters of the Indian Ocean, all those who were affected by this tragedy which occurred in Mayotte and Mozambique during the passage of Cyclone Chido.” A minute of silence was observed.
The festivities continue throughout the island today and in the capital this afternoon with the traditional parade, which will bring together 1,500 participants representing the different districts of Saint-Denis.
