President of the Confederation Karin Keller-Sutter celebrated in her canton of Saint-Gall – rts.ch

The canton of St. Gallen and the city of Wil (SG) celebrated the election of Karin Keller-Sutter as President of the Confederation on Thursday. The Federal Councilor arrived in her hometown on a special train. The authorities rolled out the red carpet for him.

The Minister of Finance visited Eastern Switzerland accompanied by a large delegation. Karin Keller-Sutter will succeed Valaisan Viola Amherd as President of the Confederation.

Schoolchildren, the city drummer and a folk group accompanied Karin Keller-Sutter through the streets of Wil from the station to the old town. This is where the festivities take place.

The apron is “used and already paid for”. “You can remove the presidential gift item from the budget,” the current president humorously told the finance minister.

Elected in 2018 to the Federal Council

Karin Keller-Sutter grew up in Wil. It was there that she began her political career as a liberal-radical in the city’s Parliament. From 2000 to 2012, she was state councilor for the canton of St. Gallen. She served on the Council of States before being elected to the Federal Council in 2018.

Karin Keller-Sutter was elected President of the Confederation by the Federal Chambers on December 11. The last St. Gallen presidency of the Confederation dates back to Kurt Furgler, 40 years ago.
