Teofilo Chantre’s melodies act like spells: songs light as the wind, sweet as love, all charged with the spray of his small archipelago, Cape Verde. He himself, modestly, recognizes this magic, which he has cared for since childhood, when he composed poems in the footsteps of his father, wandering on the arid hills of his adopted island, São Vicente. “As far back as I can remember, I have always had little insistent, resistant music in mind: such a jingle that inspires me, such a melody that haunts me… So, in order not to sink into obsession, I delivers by creating songs. “, confesses Teofilo. At the heart of his songs, fashioned in Cape Verdean Creole, he paints small pieces of his country, creates typically Cape Verdean stories. He sings of the love that connects two souls on the thread of a bossa (Alma sorriso), returns to the loss of the loved one and the tenacious hope of renewal (É sô dò), or even borrows from his lyricist of Father Vitorino Sings the words of a luminous serenade (Serenata pa nha m ê). On this disc, he also addresses new generations, as in Futuro d’evolução, where he describes the transformation of the world and the need to preserve traditions.
