Toxic relationship. On December 16, 2024, a man in his twenties was tried by the Rouen court (Seine-Maritime) for having threatened to kill several people, including his ex-partner, one of his friends and his partner. He is accused of domestic violence.

“Kiss another and I’ll kill you”

On July 9, 2023, Laura* filed a complaint for domestic violence and death threats. She accuses her ex-partner, Jérémy*, with whom she formed a relationship between 2020 and 2022. In the file, voice recordings and screenshots of explicit messages indicate these threats.

I left my job because he knew where I worked. The fact that he was in detention did me good. I’m afraid of him.

“Kiss another and I will kill you”, “If I come now, I’m going to kill everyone“, “I’m going to put a liter of gasoline in your living room”, relates the president of the court. Marie*, a friend of the victim, also filed a complaint after receiving insulting voice messages and death threats towards her and her partner. She had never met the accused before.

Jealous and possessive

Jérémy is described as “jealous and possessive”. He controls her clothing, makes degrading remarks towards Laura, “you’re an easy girl”, and prevents her from going out to see her friends.

Placed under judicial supervision, he is finally incarceratedbecause it breaks the ban on contacting the victim, after having exchanged messages.

“I regret everything. I’m sorry,” he explains in court, in front of Laura’s disillusioned look. He then places himself as a “victim”, and explains that he suffered “a trauma”. The president of the court asks him to explain his position. “When I was with her,” stammers the defendant. He adds: “This relationship changed everything in my life, I’m trying to get out of it, but I can’t. »

It was a top. Suddenly he left, suddenly he came back. He was with me the day I gave birth. Afterwards, he left. He was just going back and forth. I decided to cut ties. He didn’t accept. He said I belonged to him.

“What do you think?[Laura]? », asks the president? “Nothing,” Jérémy replies several times. On the stand, both admit to having experienced “a toxic relationship”. Together they have a child. But this one will not be not recognized by his father.

Found guilty

Laura’s lawyer deplores “behavior which marks a form of impunity” and underlines with astonishment that the accused places himself “as a victim”. He continues: “We hear from his mouth the word regret, not the word excuse. »

The public prosecutor, who believes that “we have here an illustration of the harm that words can do”, is demanding four months in prison.

“It’s a sad affair,” acknowledges Jérémy’s lawyer, who insists that he “is totally aware of what he did.” His counsel also emphasizes that he is not minimizing the facts. “He spent 22 days in detention, that’s not nothing for a 20-year-old kid who has never been convicted,” notes the criminal lawyer. The defendant was ultimately found guilty and sentenced to eight months in prison.
