This Tuesday, December 17 in the morning, the students4th grade students from Pierre Puget college in Toulonlocated in the priority education network (REP), have shown their commitment to the environment. As part of the “Oceano pour Tous” educational competition, organized by the Oceanographic Institute of Monacothey participated in a series of educational and practical activities, including a unique coral rehabilitation and planting workshop.
Concrete actions for coral reefs
Supervised by Sandrine Treyvaud“gardener of the sea and corals” and member of the Oceano Quest France associationthe middle school students learned to rehabilitate and plant coral directly on Mourillon beach. An initiative which aims to raise awareness among young people of the threats weighing on coral reefs, essential for marine biodiversity.
For two hours, the students discovered the techniques used to protect these fragile ecosystems, while contributing to the preservation of the reefs themselves.
Raising awareness of environmental issues
In addition to the practical workshop, the middle school students participated in educational sessions to better understand the consequences of greenhouse gases on the oceans. The acidification of waters, the rise in sea temperatures and their impacts on fauna and flora were at the center of the discussions. This educational project, supported by Estelle Lefébure, aims to raise the ecological awareness of young people by making them actors of change.
A collective and committed project
The competition “ Oceano for All » allows young people from environments far removed from the marine world to discover the richness of ocean ecosystems each year. For Pierre Puget’s students, this project is part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fighting plastic pollution.
They plan in particular to measure CO2 levels in their classrooms, to raise awareness among their classmates about air and ocean pollution, and to continue the sorting and recycling actions initiated by their predecessors. At the same time, cleanings of Mont Faron and the beaches of Toulon will complement these concrete efforts for the environment.
