a wave of dust invades the country – Ouestaf.com

Ouestafnews – A major wave of dust invaded the Senegalese capital on December 18, 2024. The situation is similar in certain cities in the interior of the country. The day before, the National Agency for Civil Aviation and Meteorology (Anacim) had warned of the possible presence of a wave of dust.

In Dakar, the sky, usually blue, is veiled by an immense fog of dust, giving a yellowish appearance to the atmosphere. Visibility is reduced everywhere in the capital.

In the city, masks, which had enjoyed great success during the Covid 19 pandemic, have resurfaced, although without becoming widespread.

On December 17, 2024, the National Agency for Civil Aviation and Meteorology (Anacim) warned of this dust wave, accompanied by a significant drop in temperatures, and which could extend until December 23, 2024. .

In a press release sent to Ouestaf News, Anacim indicates that this wave of dust will be felt more particularly in around ten localities located in the North and Center, notably in Saint-Louis, Podor, Matam (north); in Linguère, Louga, Kaolack (center), Thiès, Dakar, Diourbel (west and center). According to Aanacim, in these areas, “concentrations will be higher and consequently visibilities will be reduced”.

The Agency notes, on the other hand, that in the south of the country (Kolda, Ziguinchor, Sédhiou), the effects of the dust will be “less marked”, but could be felt intermittently. In this area, this phenomenon will begin to gradually ease from Saturday, December 21, the agency reports.

The meteorological agency reports that this dust wave is expected to intensify across the entire territory from December 19, 2024.

In February 2024, Senegal also experienced the presence of a “dense layer of dust” across the entire Senegalese territory. Anacim explained in its bulletin dated February 19, 2024, that this meteorological condition was “the result of a particular atmospheric phenomenon” that could impact “air quality”.

According to the National Civil Aviation and Meteorology Agency, during this dust wave, air quality will “worsen and reach the extreme stage.” Faced with this situation, populations, particularly those in the Northern and Central regions, were recommended to take precautions, particularly vulnerable people suffering from respiratory or heart problems.
