The State wants to show Mayotte the solidarity of the entire nation in the face of the disaster. For this, Emmanuel Macron is expected on Thursday on the archipelago, devastated by the deadly passage of Cyclone Chido and threatened by a health crisis, according to an announcement from the Elysée on Tuesday evening.
The new Prime Minister François Bayrou, under fire for having favored the municipal council of Pau on Monday in the midst of the Mahoran crisis, will follow suit as soon as “(his) government is formed”, in order to “mobilize all the resources of the State,” he said on France 2.
The inhabitants lack everything
A curfew has been in place since 10 p.m. Tuesday and runs until 4 a.m. this Wednesday morning to ensure security and avoid looting, while the inhabitants of this Indian Ocean territory lack everything. Some 100 tonnes of food will be distributed this Wednesday in Grande-Terre, and 20 tonnes in the two communes of Petite-Terre, according to the authorities.
The situation remains very difficult in the archipelago, where housing but also public infrastructure were badly damaged by the passage of the cyclone. The provisional toll reached 22 dead and 1,373 injured, according to figures communicated Tuesday evening by the Ministry of the Interior. But the authorities fear “several hundred” deaths, perhaps even “a few thousand” in the poorest department in France.
