On December 9, 2024, the Île-de-France region and the department of Seine-Saint-Denis announced a partnership for active mobility. On the menu: an envelope of 50 million euros released by the Region to support projects, totaling 120 million euros. The objective? Boost the department’s 100% cycling plan and deploy the Vélo Île-de-France (VIF) network.
Decarbonizing the roads: a bet on cycling
According to the press release, this partnership aims above all to offer serious alternatives to the individual car. By investing massively in secure cycling infrastructure, Seine-Saint-Denis intends to transform its streets into dedicated spaces for non-motorized two-wheelers.
The goal: to make life easier for everyday cyclists. By reclassifying public space, Seine-Saint-Denis wants to eliminate the “urban cuts” that hinder travel. We want to rethink the streets, create cycle paths worthy of the name, and finally give space back to pedestrians.
The Vélo Île-de-France network is being deployed
According to the department, the Vélo Île-de-France (VIF) network will expand significantly in Seine-Saint-Denis. Several strategic sections are on the program:
– V1 North : from Paris to Écouen.
– V2 Nord : from Paris to Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport.
– V3 Nord : from Paris to the Parc International des Expositions de Villepinte in phase 1, to Claye-Souilly in phase 2.
– V4 is : from Paris to Marne-la-Vallée Chessy.
– V6 Ouest : from Paris to Cergy-Pontoise via Asnières.
– V20 : the big belt to get around the capital.
These new cycle routes should offer continuous and secure routes to users, indicates the Region. It’s a way of connecting municipalities together and facilitating travel by bike over greater distances.
A tense budgetary context
Valérie Pécresse, President of the Île-de-France Region, underlined that this significant financial effort comes despite a tense budgetary context. “This is proof of our commitment to the inhabitants of Seine-Saint-Denis” she said.
For his part, Stéphane Troussel, President of the department, did not fail to point out that Seine-Saint-Denis is recognized as a leader in cycling development in Île-de-France by the Vélo Île-de-France collective. A way of saying that the territory is in advance and wishes to stay that way. “The Department’s Bicycle Plan is a budget of 150 million Euros with the objective of making 100% of departmental roads cycleable.“, specifies the community.
