The five suspects, aged 27 to 34, appeared today for acts of violence against two plainclothes police officers on the night of December 12 to 13 in Nice.
The criminal court decided to place three of them in pre-trial detention, as requested by several police unions. They were handcuffed and escorted away after today’s hearing.
The hearing on the merits will be held on February 14, 2025.

The two police officers were in plain clothes that evening. They allegedly presented themselves as part of the police after having declined an offer of cannabis from the attackers. According to another version, an inappropriate remark towards a female colleague sparked the altercation.
Several witnesses, some of whom filmed the scene, witnessed a scene of great violence. In the videos, one of the police officers, on the ground, is dragged and hit on the head. The victims, hospitalized, were diagnosed with four days of total incapacity for work (ITT).
While the public prosecutor, Damien Martinelli, had requested placement in pre-trial detention, the five accused were released under judicial supervision while awaiting the judgment. This decision triggered immediate anger from police unions, with some denouncing an escalation of “anti-cop clothes”.
For Bruno Bartocetti, secretary of SGP Police Unit 06, the incident illustrates a worrying trivialization of violence against police officers.
“In Nice, as in other large cities, it is difficult to feel safe, even in the city center”he lamented a few days after the videos were broadcast, to France 3 Côte d’Azur.
