Richard Benkemoun, vice-president of the sound library, leaves behind a life of commitment

It was on December 6 that Richard Benkemoun died, at the age of 86, surrounded by the love of his wife Claude, his family, his children, his grandchildren, and his niece. He left us surrounded by the respect and affection of the people he knew throughout a life devoted to solidarity with his fellow citizens, as part of his various activities within the Camargue Lions Club. He was president during the terrible floods of 2003, devoting himself body and soul to the affected families.

It was then at the head of the sound library that Richard Benkemoun devoted many years, modernizing it and ensuring its transition to digital which allowed him to extend his field of action and establish links and sharing with all the sound libraries in the country.

Passionate about painting and literature

He was not originally from Arles, but after Sidi Bel Abbès, , Vigneux and Créteil, he came to settle in Fontvieille in 1978 to find the sun and his large Arlesian family. First a bailiff associated with his cousin Pierre Benkemoun, he then created the company Benkemoun Immobilier.

Very cultured, Richard Benkemoun was passionate about painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, history and literature. Attached to music, he participated in the Lions Club musical week created by Maurice Schmidt for young Arlesians.

He loved Arles deeply, spoke with passion about the arenas, the Romans, the collections and mosaics of the Arles Antique museum as well as the most modern works exhibited at the Réattu Museum which he knew so well. The private mansions of Arles held no secrets for him and he never missed the Rencontres de la Photo event.

Provence extends its most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
