A study recommends the permanent closure of several tunnels in Brussels

The closure of five Brussels tunnels by 2030 would save several tens of millions of euros, without having a major impact on mobility, according to a Brussels Mobility study carried out with the Stratec design office mentioned on Friday The evening.

The five tunnels (Vleurgat, Bailli, Boileau, Georges Henri, Woluwe) are directly targeted “for elimination by 2030”. In this scenario, an estimate of the costs (of reallocation and redevelopment to be carried out versus those of renovation and maintenance avoided) expects a saving of around 60 million euros in the long term, writes Le Soir.

In addition to upkeep and maintenance costs, major renovations weigh particularly heavily on the bill. Given the high renovation costs of the structure by 2029 (more than 30 million euros), the total removal of the Bailli tunnel alone would save more than 40 million euros, the report estimates. In terms of mobility, the preliminary study predicts “reasonable” travel time extensions and “limited” or even “low” traffic transfers.
