The price of medicines must take into account waste caused by inappropriate packaging or dosages. The Council of States largely supported two motions to this effect on Thursday.

(Keystone-ATS) Packaging that is too large or too small, inappropriate dosages or shapes can lead to waste, recalled Erich Ettlin (C/OW) on behalf of the committee. And this must be taken into account when setting prices.
If more suitable package sizes, dosages or dosage forms are authorized abroad only and are cheaper than existing alternatives in Switzerland, they must be able to be imported by healthcare professionals for their patients, clarified the centrist. These medications will be reimbursed by insurers.
The second motion calls for a report on the nature and extent of drug waste. The information currently available on waste and the measures taken to remedy it is not sufficient.
