A support rally was organized at Epsylan, the psychiatric establishment located in Blain (-Atlantique), Monday December 2, 2024at the initiative of the chairman of the supervisory board, supported that day by 18 elected officials. We take stock.

Psychiatry crisis in Loire-Atlantique: a gathering in Epsylan

The elected officials, 18 were present in support, alerted to the critical situation of psychiatry in Loire-Atlantique by mobilizing all the stakeholders concerned “ facing an unprecedented crisis. It's been two years that we've been warning about correct care. This has to change,” proclaims Nicolas Oudaert, president of the Supervisory Board of Epsylan, mayor of Gâvre, vice-president of Pays de Blain and departmental advisor.

18 elected officials in support

18 elected officials from the territory came to support this major cause public health.

Yves Praud, director of Epsylan, recalled that the situation has deteriorated since 2022with work stoppages, a number of beds which is now 20 open (compared to 74 two years ago)…

“We no longer have reception capacity. We have 20 doctors todayi, against 39 before. And we have two departures announced in 2025… The CHU closed 14 bedsin South Loire eight will also be closed. There are fewer bedsbut more demand. »

An alarming situation for the entire Loire-Atlantique. “ These 20 remaining beds are now under serious threat in the very short term, plunging the structure and its patients into an extreme emergency situation. »

“We have to find solutions”

Epsylan covers a basin of 340,000 inhabitantsrepresenting 55% of the department. This drastic reduction in reception capacity puts strong pressure on the department's other psychiatric establishments, already saturated, and threatens to deprive a large part of the population of access to suitable psychiatric care.

« Psychiatric hospitalization must be imperative be preserved in all territories. He would be unthinkable to no longer have a means to take care of patients in crisis, even though our hospital has in recent years known build admirable care pathways », underlines Nicolas Oudaert.

“A dramatic situation”

Yves Praud, the director, spoke of a pooling of medical resources “so that patients can have care”.

In 2023, more than 8,000 people were welcomedincluding 85% in outpatient care.

The mayor of Blain, Jean-Michel Buf, regretted not seeing the ARS (Regional Health Agency) more often in Epsylan.

“We are going to find ourselves with people who do not will no longer know where to go, who will be wanderingwhile the support should be definitive,” he told the elected officials present.

MP Jean-Claude Raux spoke of a “dramatic, extremely complicated situation” and invited the State to rethink the health system.

Epsylan hopes that this gathering will serve as a collective shock and will make it possible to obtain concrete commitments to preserve a psychiatric system at the service of all.
