the incinerator project in Sonzay is abandoned

After months of consultation, Martin Cohen, the president of Touraine Propre and vice-president of the Métropole de in charge of waste, announced that the union “abandoned the idea of an incinerator for the Metropolis of Tours” this Tuesday, December 3, 2024 during a public meeting organized in Joué-lès-Tours. The last site in the running, that of Sonzay, was ruled out, after the first two (one near the air base and the other in Parçay-Meslay) received an unfavorable opinion from the Directorate General of Aviation civil (DGAC).

“We will have at least 10,000 tonnes of waste left”

However, residents of Sonzay and elected officials came to express their opposition to the establishment of an energy recovery unit (UVE) in their commune.

If the Chinonais UVE, in Saint-Benoît-la-Forêt, has been confirmed (it will take the place of the current incinerator, at the end of its life) and could gain in production volume if the studies are conclusive, it will not be able to accommodate all the waste from the Metropolis of Tours.

Martin Cohen thus explained that the 69,000 tonnes of annual waste from Tours Métropole (60,000 tonnes) and the Communities of Communes of Gâtine-Racan and Touraine-Est Vallées (9,000 tonnes between them) would be sent to the UVE of Chinonais and in neighboring departments. The Lasse incinerator (Maine-et-), of which the Metropolis is a shareholder and which will gain a new oven line in 2028, and that of are concerned.

“But in the best case scenario, we would have at least 10,000 tonnes leftunderlines the president of Touraine Propre. We do not yet have a final solution for this waste. »
