Why did the Pope choose to go to Corsica and not to the reopening of Notre-Dame de ?

The Pope is expected in Corsica on December 15, 2024 for his 47the apostolic journey. He will preside over the closing mass of a conference on popular religiosity in the Mediterranean. On the other hand, although he was invited, he will not be present on December 7 and 8 for the reopening of Notre-Dame de . Many have asked themselves the question: why did you choose Corsica and not Notre-Dame de Paris for your third stay on French soil?

For Mgr Laurent Ulrich, Archbishop of Paris, there is nothing surprising: “To tell you the truth, I knew it for a very long time because I asked him the question at the very beginning of my presence in Paris”, he revealed during a press conference in mid-November. According to the Archbishop of Paris, the Pope prefers to go where his predecessors have never gone, “in small countries, where there are few Christians, few Catholics, who experience difficult situations. »

A very short stay

The Pope will participate “through prayer” upon the reopening of Notre-Dame. “I do not regret his response, since it corresponds to the way he envisages his ministry, affirmatively Mrg Ulrich. I hope we get a message from him. »

The pope was invited by Mgr François-Xavier Bustillo, popular and media cardinal of Corsica, to attend the closing day of a conference on popular religiosity in the Mediterranean. He will arrive at 9 a.m., leave at 6 p.m. and celebrate mass at 3:30 p.m.

“This is a conference which is usually held on both shores of the Mediterranean, on popular religion and popular piety, explains Mgr Ulrich. It is a subject that is very consistent with what the Pope wishes to support, develop and help. When he was asked to come and conclude this conference, he accepted as he did last year in , on the Mediterranean meetings. »
