His mother was also convicted of concealment of property.
More than 200 packages vanished. This is what tipped La Poste off. Last January, the company noted an abnormal increase in the number of package complaints on its L'Hospitalet site. After rapid internal investigations, one of the employees was implicated. Tried Thursday, November 28 for breach of trust, he admitted the facts. His mother was also appearing for concealment of property.
“I was stupid: I stole without thinking, being purely selfish. I take full responsibility for it.” On the stand, the 25-year-old defendant lowers his head in contrition and explains the ritual that had become his during these few months of crime. On each trip he made in his truck full of packages, the employee kept “between 20 and 30 packages” for himself, drawn at random from the pile entrusted to him, and brought them back to his mother with whom he lived. “I was doing it because of my mother’s health. She doesn't have much help to take care of herself and I wanted to protect her. In fact, I did quite the opposite,” sighs the young man. “Why didn’t you give him part of your salary as rent?” », questions the court judge. “I didn’t think about it,” admits his interlocutor.
Suffering from multiple sclerosis, his mother was also present on the stand that day. She was the one who resold the packages on the Leboncoin and Vinted sites, most often for a pittance. According to the two defendants, the mother was not aware of how her son obtained the packages. “I never worked at La Poste, I didn’t know how it worked. My son told me that packages that were not claimed were burned. I believed it,” explains this former video club manager, now retired. Obviously, she was naive,” adds her advice, Me Camille Mallemouche.
For the prosecution, the argument is not enough. “Sometimes we refuse to see the truth. It’s easy to hide behind that, we have to take responsibility,” insists the deputy prosecutor who requires a suspended prison sentence for the son and community service for the mother. In total, the pair estimates having illegally received 1,500 euros. A fairly paltry sum, especially compared to the risk involved. Especially since La Poste estimates its damage at 5,900 euros.
Finally, the two defendants were sentenced to a prison sentence entirely accompanied by a simple suspension: 4 months for the son and 2 months for the mother. They must also reimburse La Poste’s losses in full.
