The altar, the tabernacle, the baptistery, the ambo (pulpit) and the cathedra… These exceptional objects of the liturgical furniture of the cathedral of Notre-Dame de which will reopen on Sunday December 8 after five years of work, are stamped 100% Drome! They bear more precisely the seal of the workshop of the sculptor designer Guillaume Bardet in Dieulefit, of the Barthélémy foundry directed by Pierre Abattu in Crest, and from Olivier Chastel's Le Grain d'orge workshop in Grane.

Combined in an extraordinary challenge, these three Drôme companies were key players in the reconstruction of this architectural jewel of the capital, partially destroyed by a fire in April 2019.

The design of liturgical furniture

In June 2023, designer Guillaume Bardet was chosen from 70 candidates to design liturgical furnitureof Notre-Dame de Paris. It was in his workshop in Dieulefit that he imagined and created these wax sculptures. His sketch objects were then cast at the Barthélémy Art foundry in a noble and timeless material: bronze.

“End of construction on Notre-Dame de Paris with President Emmanuel Macron. Thanks to Guillaume Bardet (sculptor designer) for his trust,” said Guillaume Serre, head of the carving workshop at the foundry, in a Facebook post during the final visit to the cathedral construction site by the head of the State, Friday November 29.

More than a year of work was necessary “to mold, retouch, cast, chisel, patinate and polish the liturgical furniture”. On the Drôme coast, Olivier Chastel, stonemason at the head of the Le Grain d'orge workshop in Grane, was also involved in the adventure, notably creating the stone bases for the various pieces.

“More than 7000 hours of work”

A work of goldsmith praised by the prefecture of Drôme. “100% Drôme pride in the service of world heritage! In Crest, in our beautiful Drôme, the Barthélémy Art foundry played a key role in the reconstruction of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral,” state services in the department appreciated in a Facebook post.

Before detailing: “Artisans from Drôme, with more than 7,000 hours of work, have shaped exceptional pieces in sculpted bronze, such as the tabernacle and the altar, thus allowing the reopening of the cathedral on December 8! »
