Is Emmanuel Macron looking to replace Michel Barnier?

Unsurprisingly, the Prime Minister drew out article 49.3 as part of the adoption of the Social Security budget. “On the basis of article 49 paragraph 3 of the Constitution I hold my government responsible for the entire Social Security financing bill for 2025in its version resulting from the work of the joint joint commission and modified by the editorial and coordination amendments tabled”, declared Michel Barnier from the podium. “And I do this by calling for the responsibility of each of the representatives of the Nation that you are convinced that our common mission (…) is to serve and the French.”

Michel Barnier could therefore be dismissed from the functions he has held since September 5. From Monday afternoon, the left confirmed that it would table a motion of censure against the government. Michel Barnier “will have both dishonor and censorship”, launched Mathilde Panot, president of the La France insoumise group. “The four left-wing groups in the National Assembly are in the process of tabling the motion of censure,” underlines André Chassaigne, leader of the communists in the National Assembly.

For his part, the National Rally also decided : “As I speak, a motion of censure is being tabled. We will vote to censure the government,” declared Marine Le Pen from the National Assembly, estimating that “the government has only acceded to one of the requests that we were doing.”

Emmanuel Macron consults

So far only one motion of censure has been adopted in the history of the Fifth Republicin 1962, under Georges Pompidou. Faced with the risk of the fall of the Barnier government, Emmanuel Macron would have already taken a head start.

According to information from Politico, the head of state is already looking for a replacement. ““If it falls, who do we put behind it?”, in essence, asked Emmanuel Macron to “a certain number of political leaders over the past 48 hours”, according to a friend of the Elysée and a high-ranking advisor who told us both confided that yes, “the PR is already consulting””, reports Politico.

Could Bruno Retailleau replace Michel Barnier?

Same atmosphere as for the nomination of Barnier, the new Prime Minister will have to convince, at the risk of being immediately censored. The nomination of a new candidate from the NFP is therefore excluded. It will take a personality appreciated by a large majority of the central bloc and by the right.

Within the Tribune Dimanche, a name resonates: that of Bruno Retailleau. “The tenant of the Elysée judges the Minister of the Interior, whom he did not know before, very reliable and respectful of the institutions”, indicates the newspaper, reports L'internaute.
