The 2024 Telethon, which ended this Sunday, December 1 at 2 a.m., marked a new stage in the national mobilization in favor of genetic research and rare diseases. With a national tally amounting to 79,801,520 euros, this edition, although held on an unusual date, received an exceptional outpouring of solidarity.
In the Val-d'Oisethe generosity of donors made it possible to collect 371,798 euros. This result reflects local involvement of volunteersassociations and individuals, committed to this great humanitarian cause. As elsewhere in France, numerous events were organized to mobilize residents. The funds collected support the scientific initiatives and support families affected by these illnesses.
A scientific advance highlighted
This year, the Telethon highlighted a major breakthrough in fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophyone of the emblematic diseases at the origin of its creation. Sacha, an 8-year-old child treated two years ago with gene therapy, embodies the hope renewed thanks to donations. This treatment allowed the young boy to regain strength and perform actions as simple as climbing stairs, a challenge previously unthinkable for him.
Laurence Tiennot-Hermentpresident of the AFM-Téléthonpraised this scientific feat:
“Today, the impossible no longer exists. Sacha's victories lead the way. What the researchers tell us is that they know how to do it, but they need the means.”
The mobilization continues
The Telethon does not stop at these thirty hours of television broadcasts. Donations remain possible until December 6 via 36 37 or the association's website. This extension is essential to maximize the resources available to researchers, who are multiplying projects in search of innovative treatments.
The success of this campaign is also based on a strong partnership with France Télévisions. Delphine Ernotte Cuncipresident of the company, said: “The donations collected will enable us to achieve new victories for patients and their families. Thanks to Mika, an exceptional sponsor, and to all the teams for their mobilization.”
