“We took our time…” Luc, 68, is seated next to his brother Pierre on the stage of the Saint-Allouestre village hallin Morbihan, where a special installation/transmission day is taking place this Friday, November 29, 2024, organized by the Chamber of Agriculture of Brittany.

In an exercise that is not usual for them, the two brothers and the young couple, Sébastien and Aline, seated alongside them, tell how the transmission of the farm, located in Baud, to the younger generation took placein particular thanks to the aid and measures of the Chamber.

Since 2021, an installation for two departures in Brittany

“It took seven years in total. It’s a bit long” smiles Luc. But the transmission of farms, a crucial issue for the future of agriculture and in particular breeding, often requires careful work on the handover. The two brothers' 125 hectares were, until then, devoted to the production of 500,000 liters of milk per yearto a fattening pig farm and a little beef on a very grouped plot. “But around 2021, with age and the weight of work, we started to disengage a little“, remembers Luc. With his brother, they gradually switched to beef and abandoned milk production. “By reducing the workload in this way, we also reduced the stress of waiting to find the right buyers.”

A completely different project

Registered with “ installation home directory », a system proposed by the Chamber, Luc and Pierre carry out the visits. In all they receive 14 candidates to take over their farm. But none do the trick, not counting those who want to transform everything into cereals, “out of the question”, for Luc.

In March 2023, while they still imagine passing on a dairy farm, even if they abandoned it for reasons of workload, it is a completely different project which will see the light of day thanks to Sébastien and Aline and seduce Luc and Pierre.

“Bankers are afraid of horses. It was the cattle and pigs that helped us put together a case. The production already in place of pigs and beef reassures the bankers. »

Aline's thing, These are the horses. Breeding and guarding. “I absolutely wanted to keep this activity,” she explains. And I immediately saw this 30 hectare island (previously intended for dairy cows) which could be devoted to horses. »

“The problem is that bankers are afraid of horses,” smiles Sébastien. These are the cattle and pigs who helped us put together a case.The production already in place of pigs and beef reassures the bankers. » Without denying their installation project, in the town of their birth in Baud, he proposes a diversification which will precisely allow a solid recovery.

“We realized very quickly that their project was serious”

“It was the contact that prevailed,” assures Luc. We realized very quickly that their project was serious,we felt confident from the start.» The two brothers will even provide their support to the young couple during project financing meetings.

Thus the old dairy farm became at the beginning of 2024 the Castello livestock farm, with its horses, pigs and oxen. “Luc still helps me in the pigsty” appreciates Sébastien. “We often offer them a helping hand, but they don’t overuse it,” smiles Luc.
