Catherine Bouënard, winner for nine years, was forced, by a fraction, to give up her place as champion of France to her lifelong rival.
The end of an unchallenged reign of almost a decade. Title holder since 2013, Catherine Bouënard, nine-time French knitting speed champion, put her title back on the line this Sunday, December 1 as part of the Créations & savoir-faire trade show which was held in Paris.
Has the one that all observers thought was untouchable in this discipline which consists of knitting the maximum number of stitches in three minutes with number 4 needles cracked under the pressure? She herself, at BFMTV, indicated before the competition that the event remained unpredictable.
“It’s never a foregone conclusion, until the last second. It’s just going to come down to the fact that we can’t make any mistakes for three minutes, and then we need a strong mind” , she indicated.
“It’s astonishing”
Ultimately, it was by a stitch, 231 against 230, that Catherine failed against her long-time rival, who has had multiple second places since 2013, Isabelle Steger. Nicknamed the “Poulidor of knitting”, this therapist, who caught knitting fever at the age of 7, says she is amazed by her victory.
“I'm moved. It's been 10 years since I've been second all the time, so it's surprising. I can't believe it yet,” she told BFMTV.
Catherine Bouënard, who has developed a new knitting technique which consists of putting one of her needles between her legs, is determined to return next year to regain her title.
