French President Emmanuel Macron admitted that there was a “massacre” perpetrated by soldiers of his country against Senegalese riflemen in Thiaroye (a suburb of Dakar) in 1944. The announcement was made by the head of the Senegalese State, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, November 28, 2024, during an interview given to several French media including France 2.
On December 1, 1944, dozens or even hundreds of African riflemen, according to some historians, were killed by the French colonial army while they were demanding payment of their arrears of pay after their return from the Second World War.
Asked whether or not French forces should remain in Senegal, President Faye spoke in favor of their departure in the name of Senegal’s sovereignty even if there is not yet a “deadline”. But, he clarified, the French authorities will have “the scoop” on the announcement and the timetable will be established within a diplomatic framework.
The Senegalese government is preparing to commemorate, on December 1, 2024, the 80th anniversary of these events in Thiaroye.
