Former Senegalese President Macky Sall, elected deputy following the early legislative elections on November 17, 2024, will not sit in the national assembly.
“In accordance with the commitment I made on this subject, I will resign from my mandate as deputy at the opening of the next legislature, so that the legal consequences can be drawn,” Sall said on Friday. press release broadcast on X (formerly Twitter).
“I also reiterate all my congratulations to the Senegalese people for their unwavering attachment to the democratic tradition of our country and to the values of peace and stability which underpin our living together. It is in the spirit of this democratic vitality and the values that underpin it that I agreed to lead the list of the Takku Wallu Senegal coalition,” continued Sall.
The Takku-Wallu Senegal coalition whose list Sall led in these games came in 2nd position with 531,466 votes (14.67% of the vote) for a total of 16 seats including 8 on the proportional in which President Sall competed.
According to the regulations in force, he will be replaced by the male deputy following the order of the proportional list drawn up on the basis of male-female parity.
In 2017, his predecessor as head of state, Abdoulaye Wade (2000-2012) also gave up his seat as deputy following the legislative elections.
According to several analysts, Macky Sall’s participation in the legislative elections was motivated by his ambition to deprive the new regime of a parliamentary majority, which President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko wanted to materialize their campaign promises, particularly in this which concerns accountability.
With 1.9 million votes (54.9% of the vote), the presidential camp won 130 seats out of the 165 at stake in the early legislative elections following the dissolution of parliament on September 12.
The inaugural session of the new legislature is being held on December 2 according to a decree from the president of the republic published on Wednesday.
