Six trucks from the Food Bank destroyed in an arson attack in Nîmes, Jean-Yves Chapelet condemns the “unspeakable”

On the night of November 27, an arson attack destroyed six refrigerated trucks belonging to the Food Bank in Nîmes. This heinous act hits hard an association which plays an essential role in the fight against precariousness by providing food aid to many families in difficulty.

An attack on solidarity

The mayor of Bagnols-sur-Cèze, Jean-Yves Chapelet, expressed his “stupefaction and deep indignation” at this act, which he described as “unspeakable”. “It is unthinkable that such acts would befall an organization which embodies the most essential values: solidarity, mutual aid and support for the most deprived,” he declared in a press release.

The Gard Food Bank, thanks to its volunteers and the support of its partners, ensures vital food distribution for hundreds of families every week. The destruction of these refrigerated trucks temporarily compromises its logistical functioning, essential to maintaining this aid.

Municipal support to overcome this ordeal

As a sign of solidarity, the Bagnolais councilor announced that he had contacted the president of the Gard Food Bank, Joseph Pronesti, to express the support of the municipality and residents. “We will not remain indifferent to this tragedy,” he said, adding that an exceptional subsidy will be proposed at the next municipal council to help the association rebuild its logistical resources.

This decision reflects a desire to mobilize local communities in the face of this attack on a fundamental structure for the social cohesion of the territory.

Collective mobilization necessary

The mayor called for collective mobilization to reaffirm the values of solidarity and mutual aid. “Faced with this heinous act, our collective responsibility is to come together and reaffirm our commitment to a more united society,” he stressed.

He also praised the courage of the Food Bank volunteers who, despite this ordeal, continue their mission with determination. Their commitment remains essential to ensure the continuity of aid during this period of crisis.

This arson, beyond the material damage, is a reminder of the fragility of humanitarian associations in the face of unjustifiable attacks. Solidarity and support from all will be essential to enable the Gard Food Bank to overcome this ordeal and continue its action in favor of the most deprived.
