Ballet National de (Vienna State Ballet)

From May 23 to 25, the Teatro Real will host a double dance program by the virtuoso Vienna State Ballet (Wiener Staatsballett), directed since the 2020/21 season by the Swiss choreographer Martin Schläpfer, winner of multiple awards, creator of more than 80 ballets for the dance companies with which he has worked and which enjoys great popularity among the ballet-loving public.

Two major choreographies will be performed by the Vienna State Ballet: Concertante, a dance in which eight dancers assemble and disassemble like pieces of a puzzle, and 4, a choreography to the rhythm of a Mahler symphony, which is a great tribute to the corps de ballet of the Vienna Opera.

In the first choreography, performed for the first time at the Nederlands Dans Theater 2 in The Hague on January 13, 1994, the Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen, one of the major choreographers of our time, creates a perfect interaction and total harmony between the dance and music from the Petite Symphonie Concertante composed by Frank Martin. Four couples experience the different stages of love, of seduction and devotion, of attraction and withdrawal, of intimacy and strangeness.

The second choreography of the double program, 4, is a creation by the ballet company director Martin Schläpfer, performed for the first time in Vienna on December 4, 2020. It owes its name to the fact that it choreographs the music of the Symphony n ° 4 in G major by Gustav Mahler. Around a hundred dancers stand out from the decor and slide to the music of the final bars of Mahler's Fourth Symphony, creating fantastic images with the movement of their arms and bodies.
