Do you know the history of belly from Tours (Indre-et-Loire)? For the first time, the southern square of Halles de Tours welcomes a photo exhibition from the Municipal Archives on the transformation of the Halles building over time.
The opportunity to (re)discover this place of sharing around food, a flagship location in Tours, International city of gastronomy.
Inaugurated on August 15, 1866, during Empire Day
In 1832 the municipal council of Tours launched a commission responsible for studying the idea of Halles. Finally, it was in 1864 that the project really saw the light of day. It was made by Gustave Guérin based on the model of the Halles de Paris.
The chosen location is Place d'Aumont (today Place Gaston-Paillhou), this large space already hosts a large market which is very busy.
The work ended on August 15, 1866 (feast of the Virgin Mary and national holiday of the Empire) and the inauguration takes place in the presence of civil and military authorities. The halls were extended towards the north from 1883, which led to the destruction of the Saint-Clément church.
Professionals or individuals will quickly take ownership of these Tours halls which will last for 110 years.
During the second half of the 20th centurye century, the rise of the consumer society and the renovation of the historic center of the city from the 1960s will get the better of the old halls which have become too narrow to accommodate the new ambitions of the municipality. Jean Royer In fact, in the early 1970s, the wholesale market was moved to the new peripheral area of Rochepinard.
In place of the old pavilions, an imposing building was built in April 1977.t with the aim of giving new life to the district, according to the plans of architects Jean-Claude Drouin and Michel Georginadi. Its inauguration took place on April 26, 1980.
