While the child's mother agreed to his handover to French authorities, the father initially chose a different procedure, leaving him in pre-trial detention in the Netherlands.
The father arrested with the mother in Amsterdam for having kidnapped their very premature baby in October, in a maternity hospital near Paris, will be handed over to the French authorities within ten days, an Amsterdam court declared on Wednesday.
Born two months early, little Santiago, then 17 days old, was kidnapped on October 21 by his parents from a hospital in Aulnay-sous-Bois, near Paris, where he was placed in an incubator.
After four days of tracking, Dutch police found the two parents and the baby on October 25, in a hotel in Amsterdam.
The father “finally opted for the accelerated procedure”
The mother had accepted the accelerated procedure of surrender to France. She was indicted in early November in France but left free under judicial supervision.
The father, for his part, opted for a long procedure and remained in pre-trial detention in the Netherlands, before changing his mind.
“The man finally opted for the accelerated surrender procedure, the Amsterdam court said on Wednesday. The surrender is authorized. This will take place within ten days.”
The case was highly publicized, due to the triggering of kidnapping alerts in France and Belgium.
Many police officers were mobilized to quickly find the baby who required constant care. The baby was repatriated to France on November 1.
