The position of France, which officially opposed the free trade treaty between the European Union and the Mercosur countries, seems to be shared by several of its European neighbors, since Poland, in turn, has just indicated its refusal. One week before the summit planned in Uruguay, where are the negotiations?
It's a process that runs its course. On Monday, even if this vote was only consultative, French deputies largely rejected the free trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur countries in its current state. On the side of the European Commissioner for Trade and former Prime Minister of Latvia, Valdis Dombrovskis, we assure that work continues between the two parties and a meeting is already included in the agendas of European diplomats, namely the Mercosur summit, scheduled for Thursday December 5 and Friday December 6 in Montevideo.
Poland joins the refractory
Last year, due to lack of agreement, Ursula von der Leyen had to cancel her participation. This time, she is determined to go to the Uruguayan capital. But at this stage, the European commissioner's trip to South America is far from certain, as the lines are also moving in the opposite direction.
On Tuesday, Poland joined France in opposition to Mercosur, which suggests a blocking minority in the European Council, also with Austria and the Netherlands. The threshold of four countries representing at least 35% of the Union's population would be reached. A necessary threshold to pave the way for a rejection of the agreement.
