Herd attacks by wolf predation still took place. Surveillance of the sector is set up by louveterie lieutenants who carry out nightly rounds.
Attacks on sheep were reported to the French Biodiversity Office (OFB) on November 9 and 19 at a breeder in Saint-Blin, then the day before yesterday, November 23 at a breeder in Huilliécourt. The findings of damage and the identification of possible clues allowing the assessment of the wolf's responsibility concluded that there was predation by large canids.
In view of this increase in predation, the Departmental Directorate of Territories (DDT) has urgently set up surveillance of the sector by louveterie lieutenants who carry out nightly rounds. Equipped with thermal cameras, they can spot the presence of the wolf and carry out scare shots.
“If breeders can benefit from compensation for losses from the State, this unfortunately does not compensate the moral damage suffered by the breeder nor the disruption suffered by the herd”indicates a press release from the Haute-Marne prefecture. Since the start of 2024, 26 damage reports have been made, 8 of which are attributable to wolves (17 in 2023). Haute-Marne is located on a colonization front.
