Prices have risen by 1.5% in one year, the increase is greater than that of

In Reunion, the prices of food and manufactured products are stable after a drop in September. At the national level, prices started to rise again over one month (+0.3%) “after a historic monthly drop in September (-1.2%)” according to statisticians.

Prices of services increased in October (+0.5%), after falling in September (-0.3%). While the prices of health and communications services are stable, the increase in prices is driven by that of rents, water, and household waste collection (+0.8%), that of transport services (+0.2% ), and that of other services (+0.7%).

– Stable prices for food –

Food prices were stable in October after a drop of 0.4% in September. The prices of fresh products fell again (-1.7%), while those of other food products increased (+0.3%).

Prices of manufactured products were stable in October after the sales period (-1.4% in September). The prices of clothing and shoes are rising again (+0.4%), those of health products are stable and the prices of other manufactured products are falling (-0.2%).

“In October, energy prices fell sharply again (-2.5% after -2.1% in September), under the effect of the increasing decline in the prices of petroleum products (-4.6 %): their prices are thus at their lowest since the start of 2022″ notes INSEE

In October, the price of a liter of gasoline drops by 6 cents and that of diesel by 7 cents. The prices of gas bottles, still benefiting from local aid, and electricity are stable. In October, tobacco prices fell by 0.3%.

– Inflation is higher in Reunion –

Over one year, from October 2023 to October 2024, the consumer price index increases more in Reunion (+1.5%) than at the national level (+1.2%).

“However, inflation over one year decelerated clearly again in October on the island: it stood at +2.7% in August and +2.1% in September. At the national level, inflation over one year is almost stable in October compared to the previous month. As a result, the gap between Reunion and the national level is reduced in October” specifies INSEE.

Over one year, in October, the prices of services and food increased more strongly in Reunion than at the national level. Prices of manufactured goods are falling as much, and energy prices are falling further on the island. Tobacco prices are increasing less than in France

Over one year, the prices of services increase more in Reunion (+3.2%) than at the national level (+2.3%). Services account for almost half of household consumption.

– Rent prices are increasing in Reunion –

“The increase in prices of services is due in particular to the increase in the prices of rent, water, collection of household waste (+6.1%), greater than at the national level (+2.9%). Prices of services communications increase in Reunion (+2.3%) while they decline sharply at the national level (-13.6%)” details the statistics institute.

Prices of transport services accelerated over one year on the island (+3.3%), but grew less than at the national level (+4.1%). Those of health services fell more in Reunion (-0.9%) than at the national level. The prices of other services increased again year-on-year in October (+3.2%) but less than in France (+3.5%).

Over one year, food prices increased more sharply in Reunion than at the national level (+3.1% compared to +0.6%). Food accounts for 16% of the household budget in Reunion. The prices of fresh products remain in Reunion much higher than those of October 2023 (+11.7%), but the differential continues to decrease.

– Consumption: Reunion less well off than France –

At the national level, prices of fresh products are rising again over one year (+4.5% after +2.6% in September). Excluding fresh produce, food prices increased by 1.9% over one year in Reunion; they are stable in France.

“Over one year, the prices of manufactured products fell as much in Reunion as at the national level (-0.2%). Manufactured products represent 29% of the budget of Reunionese households” notes INSEE.

Over one year, the prices of clothing and shoes fell by 2.4% in Reunion (+0.1% in France), those of health products fell on the island (-0.5%) as in national level (-1.2%). Excluding clothing, shoes and health products, the prices of manufactured products are increasing in Reunion (+0.2%), while they are stable at the national level.

Over one year, energy prices fell more in Reunion than in France (-6% in October compared to -2%). This drop is driven by that of the prices of petroleum products (-15.8% in Reunion, -12% nationally), while electricity prices increase over one year by 9.2% in Reunion and 9% in France.

“Over one year, tobacco prices increase by 8% in Reunion (+8.7% nationally)” concludes INSEE.
