Municipal police take action against violence

On the occasion of the International Day Against Violence Against Women, the Parisian municipal police are present in all districts alongside the national police and specialized associations. The objective: to inform Parisians about violence against women and to present support systems for victims.

While nearly 80% of women have already suffered at least one type of gender-based and sexual violence in the streets of , the municipal police are mobilized to fight against violence against women throughout the year. With security and public peace missions, municipal police officers can intervene in the event of flagrante delicto and liaise with the national police to arrest the perpetrator of violence and accompany the victim to the police station.

Specific training to combat violence against women

During their initial training, all municipal police officers undergo two compulsory training courses: one on “street harassment” and sexist insult and one on violence within couples. Since the creation of the municipal police in 2021, more than 2,000 officers have received this training.

The violenceometer, an awareness tool

Since 2018, an awareness tool has existed: the violenceometer, produced with the Observatory of violence against women of Seine-Saint-Denis and the “En Avant tous” association.

Inspired by existing supports in Latin America, this cardboard rule allows young girls to question their romantic relationship by deciphering the presence or threat of sexist and sexual violence in the young couple.

This support, distributed in Paris and to more than 150 communities in , can be used for prevention or to help assess the danger during support.

It has been translated into 13 languages: English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Arabic, Turkish, Chinese, Farsi, Corsican, Catalan and Japanese, with the assistance of the town hall of 10e arrondissement.
