Two municipal councils will be held on December 2 in Mons: “we are shocked, it is a waste of public money which could have been avoided!”

Two essential resignations given the incompatibility of their functions as municipal agents and with those of local elected officials. Indeed, one hour later, at 6 p.m. still within the Palais des Congrès, the two socialists will take the oath and will be installed in their new positions as aldermen. The first will be in charge of teaching and extracurricular activities, libraries, public markets and the municipal children’s council while the second will take over the presidency of the CPAS.

New administrative city in Mons: the city says stop and ends the procedure due to uncertainties about the cost and quality of the project

For the opposition, however, this double raises questions. “Honestly, we are shocked. While they are only preparing to take up their functions, this double summons testifies to all the interest shown in the money of the people of Montois”plague Opaline Meunier, municipal councilor of the Mons en Mieux group. “The last municipal council was held on November 13! Why not make them resign that day?!”

And the advisor continued: “In our opinion, this was not done because they would then have lost around ten days of salary. We prefer to organize two meetings, pay attendance fees twice than to imagine such a scenario. It is scandalous when We know that in Mons, the organization of a council costs around 10,000 euros. It is a waste of public money which could have been avoided. There are better things to do with citizens’ money! We would not have, in in any case, never done this. Even less knowing that as alderman, they are about to receive a net salary of a little more than 4000 euros. It is not because it is legal. that it’s moral.”

For its part, the town of Mons is tempering. “It’s just a matter of (bad) timing.”insists the spokesperson. “The administration was simply not able to include these two points on the agenda of the previous municipal council because the final composition of the municipal college was not yet known. There was no question of avoiding a loss of salary or anything. Moreover, the two agents could have sent their resignation letters earlier and mentioned that they would continue their duties until December 2. It was simply not possible, the college having been formed later.”

The city thus confirms that the expenses will indeed have to be incurred twice. It therefore remains to be seen whether certain elected officials will keep their attendance fees, some having in the past preferred to donate them to an association.
