In the South Channel, the hospital starts composting

The Mont-Saint-Michel hospital group (Manche) is developing its commitment to the environment. From now on, food waste will be collected for composting. “This initiative reflects our dual commitment, both to our regulatory responsibilities and our eco-responsibility towards the planet”indicates the group.

If this initiative responds to a “increasing regulatory obligation regarding food waste management”the health service also indicates that it is engaged in a process “eco-responsible”. « We firmly believe that every action counts in preserving our environment. By sorting our food waste at source and recycling it in an ecological way, we reduce our carbon footprint, contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and actively participate in building a more sustainable future. »

Transformed into compost or biogas

It is through the company Les Alchimistes that the hospital will set up this composting. « The Alchimists recycle food waste into compost in order to create fertile soils or by methanization in order to create biogas”describes the hospital center. To do this, leftover plates and restaurant production waste will be sorted and thrown into a transparent bag then stored in a specific bin. They will thus avoid being incinerated and will help either in the production of compost or biogas. The hospital also hopes, through this, to reduce food waste.
