a daily fight in the North

Between January 1 and September 30, 2024, 8,700 incidents of domestic violence were recorded in the North, an increase of 1% in one year.

Every November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women reminds us of the scale of this global scourge. In , and particularly in the department, the figures remain alarming.

According to recent data, 85% of victims of domestic violence in France are women and the North is the second most affected metropolitan department with 14.5 victims per 1,000 inhabitants aged 15 to 64.

Faced with this reality, initiatives are multiplying to offer an adapted response and strengthen prevention, support and support for victims. In the North, three new day centers dedicated to women victims of domestic violence have opened in Fourmies (Aubépine), Armentières (Olympe) and Dunkerque (Joséphine). These places offer comprehensive support – social, legal and professional – and are backed by 45 new emergency accommodation places.

Devices for a rapid and adapted response

Since the end of 2023, the universal emergency aid system has supported nearly 1,700 people in the department. This mechanism aims to provide immediate assistance to meet the essential needs of victims and enable them to rebuild their lives. At the same time, 19 social worker positions in police stations and gendarmes have been deployed to provide direct support to victims and facilitate their referral to specialized structures.

Fight against minor prostitution

Another major issue concerns the prostitution of minors, a worrying phenomenon amplified by social networks. In France, around 12,000 minors, mainly girls, are affected, often from the age of 12. The North, with its marked social fragilities, is not immune to this scourge. To respond to this, the “La Boussole” system was strengthened with the opening of the “La Maison” day center in , dedicated to young people in prostitution. This place offers a space for listening, rest and support to help these minors escape the cycle of exploitation.

Places for family assistants have also been created for break-up stays, providing a secure and temporary environment for these young people in distress. These initiatives illustrate a desire to address this problem in depth, attacking the roots of marginalization and exploitation.

Awareness and education: a pillar of prevention

Beyond emergency measures, the fight against violence against women requires increased awareness. To this end, the Northern region has increased educational actions and training programs for professionals. Forums, symposiums and interactive events, such as the “Let’s change the rules!” theater, were organized to encourage dialogue around gender-based and domestic violence.

Data show that gender stereotypes, often internalized from a young age, perpetuate sexist behavior and violence. Thus, 25% of 25-34 year olds think that it is sometimes necessary to be violent to be respected, according to the High Council for Equality between Women and Men. Education and awareness appear to be essential levers for deconstructing these preconceived ideas and preventing violence.

A collective fight

The fight against violence against women cannot be done without a collective and lasting effort. Associations, local authorities, state services and citizens are called to work together to break the cycle of violence.

This International Day is an opportunity to remember that violence against women is not inevitable. By strengthening the means of action, raising awareness and supporting victims, society can progress towards a more egalitarian and respectful future. The North, through its multiple and concrete initiatives, is showing the way to an essential and priority fight.
