Weather alert for violent winds this Monday, November 25 in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Hautes-Pyrénées, Gers, Haute-Garonne, Ariège, Tarn-et-Garonne

Météo France has placed several departments in the southwest on yellow alert for violent winds this Monday, November 25. The Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Hautes-Pyrénées, Gers, Haute-Garonne, Ariège and Tarn-et-Garonne are affected by this alert, which results in gusts that can reach significant speeds.

A tense weather situation

The prevailing southerly winds, linked to the “Bert” depression, remain particularly intense over a large part of the south and east of France. Gusts frequently reach 90 to 110 km/h in departments under yellow alert, and up to 120 km/h locally in the most exposed areas, such as valleys and mountain ridges.

During the night from Sunday to Monday, the winds strengthened, particularly in the Pyrenees and the Massif Central, before spreading towards Lyonnais and Saône-et-Loire. In the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, we recorded up to 124 km/h in Socoa, 105 km/h in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and 186 km/h in Iraty in the mountains on Sunday November 24. Towards the Massif Central, we noted this afternoon, in Aurillac 93 km/h, Clermont-Ferrand 111 km/h, Vichy 89 km/h, Le Puy 92 km/h, St-Etienne 91 km/h, Lyon- Bron 94 km/h.

Departments on yellow alert

Here are the details of the alerts by department:

Pyrénées-Atlantiques

Until midday, the wind will continue to blow violently, with gusts of 110 to 130 km/h in medium mountains and more than 150 km/h on the ridges. In the valleys, gusts of 80 to 100 km/h are expected.

Hautes-Pyrénées

During the night from Sunday to Monday, the wind strengthens in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Gusts reach 110 to 130 km/h in medium mountains (around 1500/1800m), more than 150 km/h on the crests and 80 to 90 km/h locally 100 km/h in the valleys by surge. The level of vigilance could be revised upwards towards orange if a slight worsening of these forecasts were to occur. Météo France has placed the Hautes-Pyrénées department on yellow alert until midday.

Gers

Gusts will reach 80 to 100 km/h, but the yellow alert should be lifted at 8 a.m.

Haute-Garonne

Strong winds will persist until midday, with conditions similar to neighboring departments.

Tarn-et-Garonne

Yellow alert in effect until 10 a.m. this morning.

Ariège

The alert continues until 2 p.m., with particularly strong gusts at altitude.

Expected development

The winds should gradually weaken in the afternoon, first in the Pyrenees, then in the Massif Central and finally in Lyonnais. However, Météo France does not reject the possibility of a move to orange vigilance if the forecasts were to deteriorate slightly.

Widespread weather disruptions

Beyond the winds, a rainy disturbance is also crossing France from west to east. This Monday morning, precipitation affects a large northwest quarter, extending during the day towards Champagne, Lorraine and the Pyrenees. The Cévennes are experiencing sustained rain, with expected accumulations of 100 to 150 mm in 24 hours.
