Donald Trump pushes certain celebrities into exile. The Republican's victory on November 5, 2024 in the American presidential election has encouraged several stars to fly far from the United States, for destinations, according to them, more welcoming.
First of all, the actress Eva Longoria was one of the first to indicate that she would now divide her time between Spain and Mexico. “I'm privileged,” she said in a magazine interview Marie-Claire. “I can escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren't that lucky. They're going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness are for them.”
Leaving is also the choice to Ellen DeGeneres. According to the Telegraph, the former talk show host has already left the United States for Great Britain. The star presenter, “very disillusioned”, would therefore intend to put her Californian property up for sale, and would have moved to her house in the Cotswolds, in the south-west of the country.
“I almost had an ulcer last time.”
She too had warned. In an interview with Stephen Colbert, the singer and actress Barbra Streisand claimed she would not be able to live in the United States if Trump returned to power. “I would move,” she said. “I can’t live here under an administration like this.”
Other personalities join this list: Sharon Stone seeks to establish itself in Italy. In July 2024, she already informed the Daily Mail reasons for this choice: “I’m definitely considering buying a house in Italy. I think it's a smart idea right now. (…) This is one of the first times in my life that I have seen someone run for office on a platform of hatred and oppression.”
Same thing for the singer Cher who had already had a bad experience with Trump's first term. “I almost had an ulcer last time,” she confided to Guardian in 2023. “If he comes to power, who knows? This time, I will leave the country.”
