Since the start of the school year in September 2024children taken care of by the association The French of La Manche extracurricular time et in leisure centers are associated with an original projectdesigned for 35 years of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child: the creation of a educational case .

An educational kit

From the start, this project fascinated around twenty CE2, CM1 and CM 2 students from theAlbert Bayet school in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (Manche). They devoted many hours to it for almost three months and during extracurricular time with their Francas facilitator, Odile Osmont.

Ce collective work a gave birth to a comic bookwhose main character, Zigoto, an imaginary student at the school, shares what the right to be inspires in him protected in war.

For the 35th anniversary of the CIDE

This right is one of those defended by the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) since it was adopted by the United Nations on November 20, 1989 . This November 20 is since the International Day of the Rights of the Child, or even World Children's Day.

On this occasion, Les Francas de la Manche, popular education association whose facilitators provide after-school and extra-curricular support in the schools of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, organized a day bringing together 500 children and punctuating “several weeks of educational activities on Children's Rights”.

Several themes were selected and proposed in September to the 27 after-school centers and 17 leisure centers entrusted to the Francas. Using a simple pick-axe, everyone found a theme to work on in order to compose an educational kit made of posters, recorded songs… And the comic strip produced in Bayet will be part of it.

To raise awareness of children's rights

“We started talking about it at the start of the school year, deciding who wanted to participate or not and we started by make drawings on children in war situations”, explain Albane, Gabriel, Lucien, Shaïnna, Wissem and the others, who all participated by designing, drawing, coloring, writing… ultimately composing a work rich in convictions and demands.

“It was important to make this comic book, so that others would read it, to let others know what children's rights are, to raise awareness among others. We wanted to express how lucky we are to go to school, to have fun, to be able to relax in front of the with snacks… We have nothing to complain about while other children are at war . We also wanted to say that war is not a game. It's horrible, it's only suffering, fear, sadness. We need to remember what has already happened. We say no to war,” the children share with pride, and with a maturity that commands respect.

“What’s the point of war? »

“Value does not wait for the number of years,” wrote Corneille. These schoolchildren are proof of this and teach us a great lesson. At the age of 8, 9 or 10, they are already among those who would like the rights of all to be respected.

“In countries at war, there are deaths every day. It's unfair! » “What’s the point of war? », ask these children who, if peace and their freedom are threatened tomorrow, do not want to see themselves forced to take up arms.

We can compromise otherwise, there's no point in going to war!

Well aware of the rights that are theirs, they are also progress that they still need to be done to see them fully respected, their fragility too, and the need for many to protect them.
