The fight against the effects of climate change in Morocco under debate

This meeting, which marks the start of the program called “Strengthening parliamentary engagement in climate action in the Kingdom of Morocco”, aims to allow members of the House of Representatives to exchange views and information on the priorities of climate action within the framework of public policies.

On this occasion, the president of the temporary thematic working group on the energy transition, Hicham El Hid, indicated that this meeting aims to promote the exchange of points of view, ideas and experiences on the energy transition, as well as climate change and its environmental impacts, in view of the great importance attached by Morocco to this theme and the pioneering role of the Kingdom in the management of public policies linked to climate issues.

It will also, he added, enable Members of Parliament to actively participate, alongside government officials leading climate action planning, in the preparation of the second Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC2), which should be submitted in February 2025.

For her part, Ms. Fatiha Ait Oulaid, Director of the Office of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, highlighted the importance of strengthening democracy as a fundamental pillar to confront global challenges, notably climate change, reiterating the Foundation’s support for the efforts of the House of Representatives in its crucial role in the formulation of comprehensive and integrated climate action policies.

Also, she underlined that Morocco has demonstrated a strong commitment in this area, illustrated, among other things, by its advanced ranking at the global level in the annual climate change performance index.

For his part, the environmental democracy advisor at the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, Rafael Jiménez-Aybar, considered that the fight against climate change requires political will, financing, international support, effective policies based on science, as well as a consensus within society on the most appropriate measures, particularly from the point of view of social justice.

On the program for this communication meeting, discussions on the impact of climate change in Morocco, the fight against climate change in the light of international conventions and national legislation and multilateral support for climate action in the Kingdom.
