In Valais, the bill for bad weather in June continues to rise

Published on November 21, 2024 at 6:09 p.m. / Modified on November 21, 2024 at 6:28 p.m.

For Valais Minister of Security Frédéric Favre, “the final costs will only be known at the end of the work and it is possible that they will still evolve”. The cantonal services have just completed the inventory of the damage caused by the bad weather in June. Floods and debris flows particularly affected the Anniviers valley, the Bagnes valley and the Saas-Grund station. The Rhône had burst its banks, flooding entire neighborhoods, in Sierre and Chippis in particular.

Estimated at 125 million francs at the beginning of September, the rehabilitation work which benefits from cantonal support now amounts to 217 million francs. They concern 87 of the approximately 120 Valais municipalities. Urgent and imperative expenditure will be admitted as an overrun in the 2024 account. Subsequently, amounts could be taken from the budgetary policy reserve. These figures do not include damage suffered by individuals and small, medium and even very large businesses, such as aluminum specialists Constellium and Novelis.
