“It smells like rotten cabbage”, the bad smells revolt the inhabitants of these villages in the Oise

But where do the bad smells which ruin the daily lives of the inhabitants of Tracy-le-Valnear Noyon, in the north-east of the Oise? In this village of 1,000 inhabitants, a good number of residents have complained about olfactory nuisances which have been entering their homes for several months.

A public meeting to take stock of the situation was organized last Friday, November 15 by the municipal association “Heritage and Biodiversity Meetings”, supported by the town hall.

Residents are fed up with the smells

Session to which around a hundred residents responded. The opportunity for some to let out their anger. “At night, c’est infernal ! »denounces one of them. “It wakes us up when we sleep.”

“It smells like rotten cabbage, it’s a horrible smell that comes in the evening,” says a resident of Carleponta neighboring municipality also concerned, as is also the case for Tracy-le-Mont.

“We are very polluted, these smells are terrible. We have to find a solution,” analyzes Hervé Lefranc, president of the association and resident of Tracy-le-Val. “The villagers can't take it anymore, they're fed up.”

“Extremely unpleasant” odors

According to the association, these odors come from a waste landfill center household and industrial applications and an open-air composting platform, operated by the same company Moulin-sous-Touventanother neighboring village. “An ecological disaster”, according to a resident of Tracy-le-Val.

“The open-air landfill was supposed to close in 2022. But the company received an extension until 2029 because it had not stored enough waste,” laments the president of the association.

“The company does not recognize its involvement at all, knowing that according to the DREAL (Regional Environmental Directorate), it respects the measures imposed on it by prefectural decree. The fact remains that we have bad odors, and we smell an intensification over the past three years »insists Hervé Lefranc.

We are convinced that the odors come from this waste landfill. We're going to have to be able to prove it. We are very bothered by this nuisance, it must stop because it is extremely unpleasant.

When contacted, the company concerned did not respond to our questions.

The inhabitants revolt

To try to find a solution to these odors, the village association carried out a study. Some residents have turned into “noses” to alert every feeling of this “atmospheric pollution” which invades the streets, gardens and homes of Tracy-le-Val.

Tables were produced, listing the number of alerts reported per month over the year and their intensity rate. “There is an increase between June and Septemberwhich makes summer evenings unbearable,” says the president of the association.

Around thirty complaints were sent by residents to DREAL. The sub-prefecture of Compiègne was also alerted: measures had been put in place in 2023 to try to find the origin of the odors, but nothing conclusive had been determined.

We had a disastrous summer. It stinks like shit, we can't even open our windows at night! We want to have a peaceful life without these odors that spoil our daily lives.

Faced with this observation, a question was raised by a resident during the meeting: “why is our waste not sent to be incinerated at Villers-Saint-Paul ? », denounces a resident. “The elected representatives of the Deux Vallées community of communes must take up the fight! »

For every smell, a complaint filed

In fact, the CC2V is one of the only two territories in the department (with Picardie verte) not to join the Mixed Union of the Department of Oise (SMDO).

Last Friday, the residents and the association decided to unite to write complaints to DREAL whenever a bad smell is noticed in the three villages in the future. Before a meeting planned for December between the different parties and the sub-prefect.
