On October 12, Marcel Dettling, president of the SVP, gave this speech to his party delegates: “People have had enough of mass immigration and asylum chaos, people have had enough of billions of francs are squandered abroad, while the Swiss must give up, save, always be wise and pay taxes.” Among other xenophobic declarations, this one had fueled this reflection by Marc Bühlmann, director of “L’Année politique suisse”: “See the UDC: you can discuss trafficking or agriculture and there will always be an elected official to explain that the source of the problem is immigration or Europe.” (TimeOctober 22, 2024).

This reaction is justified, especially since an in-depth approach shows that the more immigrants a country has, the richer it is. This will be demonstrated by comparing incomes and the proportion of immigrants in two advanced capitalist countries, Japan and Switzerland.
