A change of nationality of a prince has no direct consequence on the endowment he receives from the State, indicated this Wednesday the Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo, in the Interior committee of the Chamber.
In September, Prince Laurent explained in the press that he wanted to leave Belgium to settle in Italy, his mother’s country of origin, to work there and take Italian nationality. The King’s brother, however, did not inform the government of his intentions.
“The prince has indeed given a number of interviews on his future but he has not formally informed the government of his project. The prince is naturally always free to renounce his endowment and his privileges as member of the royal family In this case, the obligations defined in the law also end. This is a view that has been expressed in the past by my predecessors but the prince has never taken the initiative to do so. The government takes note of Prince Laurent’s plan to combine Belgian nationality with Italian nationality, and of his wish to live in Italy. A change of nationality does not in itself have an automatic consequence on the endowment.explained the Prime Minister.
