Michel Barnier wants to “reduce the size of processions” of ministers (and make them respect the Highway Code)

A vow of exemplarity and sobriety. This is the meaning of the discreet circular written on November 12 by Prime Minister Michel Barnier, asking his traveling ministers to reduce costs and excesses. In this missive that Info has been obtained, the new head of the French government assures that he wants to “reduce the size of the processions” of his ministers during their travels. In addition to these calls for sobriety, Michel Barnier encourages his troops to “respect the Highway Code”.

Does this seem normal to you? To hear an advisor to the executive, this will undoubtedly change the habits of some. “After five years in ministerial office, it will feel strange to have to stop at a red light,” explains this close government official to our colleagues. Michel Barnier would apply this rule to his own travel, sometimes forgoing the flashing light in the event of a traffic jam.

Inform your guests, greet them and thank them

In his circular, the Prime Minister asks his ministers that the rules “be scrupulously respected” and “in particular during trips organized as part of your actions throughout the territory”. And not just on the road. In his little charter of respect, Michel Barnier assumes that travel must be announced to the prefect no later than 72 hours in advance, except in an emergency. A real relief for prefecture employees who regularly saw members of the government announce themselves at the last minute.

The ministers will have to make sure to greet “all those who participated in the organization, from the little hands to the high-ranking officers, to thank them”. But above all, they will have to “take the time”, according to France Info. The Prime Minister wants his troops to have lunch or dinner with their hosts. A way to avoid a sudden visit like a publicity stunt.
