Syndicom, the postal employees’ union, sounded the alarm on Wednesday in Neuchâtel on the working conditions of distribution staff in the Jura Arc and Fribourg.
The union denounces the working conditions highlighting chronic understaffing which leads to long rounds for mail carriers, numerous overtime hours and increased fatigue.
A survey, to which 30% of employees responded, reveals that more than 70% of them feel work overload and excessive fatigue, and report a lack of staff within their teams.
In addition, the legal limit of 50 hours of work per week is often exceeded, says Syndicom. Unattractive starting salaries aggravate the situation, with the direct consequence that a majority of employees surveyed are considering leaving the company.
Testimony of the daily suffering of staff
“We are constantly on the razor’s edge. We are always short of staff. As soon as there are vacations, holidays or sick people, we have to take on extra work and work more hours. This situation will not end. “produced not just a few weeks in the year, it represents the majority of the year”, explains a Post Office employee, aged around thirty and working as a postman for around ten years.
He said distribution staff go to work knowing that instead of being a crew of 20, they’re running 12 or 13 people.
Measures have already been taken, explains the union, but they remain insufficient. It therefore requires compliance with the working time of 42 hours per week, as stipulated by the CCT, and that overtime is not recurring. The union also calls for immediate measures and wishes to be more involved in discussions with La Poste.
For its part, the company claims to have created hundreds of jobs in logistics last year, including 150 postman positions in the Jura region.
