The city of Nîmes, in , plans to strengthen its municipal police with new resources from 2025

In order to improve the security of the people of Nîmes, the City of Nîmes is implementing an ambitious plan to strengthen its municipal police units. Currently 169 agents, the number will increase to 200 by 2025 and 2026, an increase of 18.34%. The budget allocated to this expansion is 1.5 million euros per year.

Jean-Paul Fournier, mayor of Nîmes, recalls that security has always been a priority for his city. “Since 2001, safety has been at the heart of my commitment. The expectations of the people of Nîmes in terms of public tranquility are high, and we must respond to developments in delinquency”he declared. The plan includes the creation of a special unit to combat nuisance from night establishments and drinking establishments.

A special unit against nuisances

This new unit will have the mission of monitoring night establishments, in particular the management of noise pollution and the illegal sale of alcohol. 14 specialized agents will be mobilized every night, from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., to intervene and issue administrative fines when violations are noted. The aim is also to raise awareness among citizens and professionals about the prevention of these nuisances.

Richard Schieven, deputy security officer, emphasizes that “ intensifying vigilance on these issues is crucial for the tranquility of the people of Nîmes“. This strengthening is part of a broader reorganization of the municipal policies to optimize resources and improve presence on the ground.

Strengthening the environmental brigade

The brigade responsible for environmental offenses, which fights in particular against illegal dumping of waste, will also be strengthened. The current unit, made up of seven agents, will be supplemented by two new teams of eight agents. The latter will have broader competence, ranging from the management of illegal waste to fire prevention and the regulation of town planning. The unit will be equipped with new means of transportation, such as electric mountain bikes, motorcycles and 4×4 vehicles.

A reorganization for greater efficiency

To support this strengthening, the Nîmes Municipal Police is reorganizing its work cycles. This reorganization will make it possible to better distribute agents and ensure an increased presence on public roads, particularly during festive events which punctuate the life of the city. The urban hyper vision center, located on rue Landi, will soon bring together all staff for more efficient management.

Note that the municipal police of Nîmes is the sixth in in terms of number of agents. This reorganization and reinforcements aim to improve the responsiveness and effectiveness of interventions to respond to the security challenges facing the city.
