François Gourdon, 77, former mayor of Villennes-sur-Seine (Yvelines), from 1989 to 2014, died on Tuesday November 19, 2024, in Ajaccio (Corsica), we learned from the town hall of Villennes.
Elected mayor for 25 years, François Gourdon died following hospitalization for a septic shock, according to the town's Facebook page.
When he left town hall, during the 2014 municipal elections, he called for Michel Pons, who had made common cause with Jean-Michel Charles, to vote, between the two rounds, against Pierre-François Degand.
He is also known as a business leader, for having created the company Envea (formerly Environnement SA), located in Poissy.
When this company chose, as its core business, the fight against air pollution, in 1978, by also being called “Environnement SA”, its leaders at the time, first and foremost François Gourdon, had a keen nose.
The company specializing in measuring devices, particularly for air quality, has continued to grow, developing particularly internationally. Because by fighting against atmospheric pollution, the company was fighting against global warming.
The legacy: the transformation of Villennes
After leaving office as mayor, sailing enthusiast had told 78actu about the transformation of Villennes-sur-Seine that he had initiated, in a book entitled A village on the banks of the Seine 1989-2014.
He recounted how Jacques Masdeu-Arus (RPR), then mayor of Poissy, had advised him, in 1989, to get started (in politics). François Gourdon was then 40 years old.
“When I see all the investments undertaken to transform this village of 5,300 inhabitants today (in April 2015, Editor’s note). We got a lot of help, from the Department, the Region, the Ministry of the Environment. This book is also the memory of the village intended for children and newcomers,” François Gourdon told us.
His greatest pride: the development of sport
Among his greatest pride, he spoke of the development of sport. “We redid the sports complex, the climbing wall,” he reminded us in 2015.
On its Facebook page, the City indicates how much the former mayor of the town had marked Villennes-sur-Seine, through “his dedication” and “his commitment” to serving its residents.
“His disappearance leaves a great void in Villennes and the Municipality sends its most sincere thoughts to his family and loved ones during this painful ordeal. »
A register of condolences will be made available at the town hall for those who wish to express their support and share their memories.
