A scene of rare violence. Sunday, early in the morning, a 25-year-old woman was very violently attacked by a man in a residential area of ​​Châlons-en-Champagne (). Although his life-threatening condition is not in jeopardy, the victim was very seriously injured. She permanently lost the function of one of her eyes and had a knuckle amputated.

The suspect, a 52-year-old man from the same town, was taken into custody on Sunday. What happened?

The events took place on Sunday, shortly before 7 a.m., in a residential area of ​​Châlons-en-Champagne. According to our information, the victim was walking in the street and was on the phone when she was approached by the main suspect. The latter allegedly ordered her to give him her cell phone, which the 25-year-old young woman refused.

That’s when the surge of violence began. The 52-year-old man hit the young woman very violently and multiple times. He then allegedly dragged him by force into a white van, which he owned, and continued to beat him in the vehicle. The young woman then struggled and managed to escape from the van.

Alerted by screams, a couple intervened and managed to put an end to the attack. The main suspect then fled in his van. Emergency services then arrived on site and hospitalized the young woman in serious condition.

Around 10:30 a.m., a little over three hours after the events, the white van was found submerged in a canal of the Marne, a few hundred meters from the scene of the attack. Traces of blood were discovered inside.

What do we know about the victim and what condition is she in?

The victim is a young woman aged 25, mother of two children. According to our information, she did not know her attacker. Although her life prognosis is not serious, she has terrible injuries and will have lifelong consequences.

During his examination, the forensic doctor noted “the existence of several deep wounds on the face and scalp, fractures of the facial area as well as several fractures of the fingers and defense wounds particularly on one of his hands” , details the Châlons-en-Champagne public prosecutor’s office in a press release. “The result was permanent disability with an irreversible loss of function in one of his eyes and the amputation of a phalanx. »

How was the suspect arrested?

Sunday, at midday, a 52-year-old man presented himself at the city police station. He is intoxicated. He claims that his vehicle, namely a white van, was stolen. His testimony being confused, he was then placed in police custody. “The elements collected during the investigation made it possible to incriminate him for the acts committed,” indicates the prosecution.

He was presented to a judge on Tuesday “as part of an opening of a criminal judicial investigation into the charge of violence resulting in mutilation or permanent disability with the aggravating circumstance of the use or threat of a weapon. » He admitted the facts before the investigating magistrate. The prosecution requested his placement in pre-trial detention.

This 52-year-old man is from Châlons-en-Champagne. He has already been convicted four times for driving under the influence of alcohol. “He was implicated in 2010 for acts of rape,” informs the prosecution, but the case was closed without further action, the offense being insufficiently characterized.
