Hidalgo pays tribute to Paul Varry and sends a message… “The future does not belong to cars”

For the opening of the Paris Council, a minute of silence was observed in tribute to the cyclist killed by an SUV driver on October 15 in the capital. “Between an SUV and a bicycle, there is no comparison: one can kill, the other cannot. And that’s what happened,” added the mayor of Paris in a speech where she also expressed her anger.

“The future belongs to soft and active mobility”

An anger directed in part against those who explain “that it’s the bikes’ fault. » According to Anne Hidalgo, “of course everyone must respect” the rules, but the city councilor insisted on a leitmotif which has been his since his arrival at City Hall: “The future does not belong to the cars, it belongs to soft and active mobility. Mobility that preserves lives and our environment. »

This tribute to Paul Varry comes on the same day that Paris en Selle and Better Moving by Bicycle, two associations, are calling for the security of the “200 most dangerous intersections” in the city and to realize the “twenty priority axes” of the capital in 2025, as provided for in the City of Paris Bicycle Plan. A plan that fell behind its initial schedule.
