Faced with a colossal debt and a fragile economy, the senator from Calvados calls for strong measures to restore France's budget, without sacrificing public services or the local economy.
A situation which suggests little room for maneuver for the Senate.
“Restoring France’s finances”
“The French debt is 3,228.4 billion euros, or 112% of GDP. This is a considerable amount which has grown by 1,000 billion in 7 years in the context of weak economic growth”, underlines Pascal Allizard.
He believes that successive crises do not alone explain this drift and that France is a “bad student” in Europe when it comes to budgetary management.
A realistic goal for 2025
He considers that he is necessary and realistic to target a deficit of 5% of GDP by the end of 2025.
We cannot always postpone efforts until later. Telling the French the truth about the state of our finances seems important and responsible to me.
He insists on the importance of sending positive signals to rating agencies, European partners and investors to restore confidence in the French economy.
Serious work in the Senate
On the subject of budgetary control measures, Pascal Allizard assures that the Senate will approach these questions with “seriousness and reflection, without demagoguery”.
He recalls that the senatorial majority has long called for structural reforms to stop the “fiscal headlong rush”.
The Senate should therefore be particularly vigilant on measures concerning local authorities, which should not be used as “adjustment variables”.
Supporting Defense and the territories
Among the key points he wishes to defend, the senator emphasizes Defense and Foreign Affairs.
We are experiencing a complex international situation, made up of multiple threats.
As vice-chair of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, he will ensure that the military programming law is respected.
Elected from Calvados, he is however worried about local agriculture, breeding and typical production of his region. “Our horse racing industry cannot be weakened,” he insists.
“Create more wealth”
For the future, Pascal Allizard believes that we cannot improve public finances by reducing spending and increasing taxes alone.
We must create more wealth, improve our productivity and our capacity for innovation.
He pleads for a recovery of French industry, “great sacrifice of the last 40 years on the altar of globalization”, and calls for action to be taken against dependence on imported low-cost products.
In short, Senator Pascal Allizard calls for a national effort to restore public finances, while preserving public services and key economic sectors.
According to him, it is through the creation of wealth and innovation that France will be able to regain its place and ensure a prosperous future.
